The Future of Farming?

This video of Eric Maundu talking about his urban aquaponics company Kijani Grows has been making the rounds on Reddit and Hacker News.

Aside from the automation – how cool is it that his gardens tweets? – I think he makes some really good points about utilizing unused urban space for food production.

I live a few blocks from a bunch of abandoned industrial buildings surrounded by empty parking lots. What if the city set up Kijani-style aquaponic gardens and paid people to maintain them? It's a win-win-win-win: the abandoned buildings would be used again, unemployed people would get jobs, the food produced could be sold to (hopefully) pay for the project, and people in Balitmore would have access to locally produced healthy food.

I think Mr. Maundu is on to something.
