I have mixed feelings about using Slack as the primary method of communication for a group, but I’ve found mastering the keyboard controls alleviates a lot of my low-level frustrations.
Michael Lopp (nom de plume Rands in Repose, and VP Engineering at Slack) has a great post explaining how he gets the most out of Slack. My favorite tips of his:
cmd-k: make heavy use of the quick switcher to move between channels and DMs
cmd-shift-k: list DM conversations with the most recent first
cmd-]for back and forward
- Set the channel list to show “My unread, along with everything I’ve starred”
Some additional shortcuts I use frequently:
return: if the newest message is a thread, this will open the thread sidebar
cmd-.: show/hide the right-hand bar (this could the thread view, the keyboard shortcut list, etc.)
cmd-f: search, which has gotten a lot better recently
